Step 1 — Check where the noise is actually coming from
This is the step everyone skips, and it’s the one that makes all the difference. Try this before you buy anything: open the window, listen, then close it.
- The noise is significantly reduced but is still bothersome —it comes in through the window. A curtain would be helpful.
- The noise hardly changes —it travels through a wall, a floor, a ventilation system, or a roller-shutter box. No curtains will fix that.
- The room echoes, voices carry —that's reverberation, not transmission. You're looking for absorption, not a " soundproof curtain."

Step 2 — Demand proof, not promises
There are no regulations governing the use of the term “acoustic.” Anyone can use it. Three questions are all it takes to sort it out:
- Which laboratory, and is it ISO/IEC 17025-accredited (BELAC, COFRAC, or equivalent)?
- Which standard —ISO 10140-2 for attenuation, ISO 354 for absorption?
- What is the report number, and can you provide it upon request?
A decibel reading without these three factors has no comparative value. Also, be wary of “in-house tests” and before-and-after videos taken with a smartphone: the conditions cannot be replicated.

Step 3 — Consider the weight of the finished curtain, not the fabric
In acoustics, the law of mass is simple: given the same design, the heavier it is, the more it dampens sound. That’s physics, not marketing.
The classic pitfall: many product descriptions list the weight per square meter of the fabric alone—often 300 to 500 g/m²—as if that were proof. This is not the same measurement as the weight of the assembled curtain. Ask the question explicitly: Is this the weight of the finished curtain, or that of the fabric?

Step 4 — Allow for extra space
This is where most disappointments stem from. A perfectly made curtain that’s the wrong size is just as disappointing as a mediocre one.
Side overlap: At least 15 to 20 cm on each side of the opening; otherwise, the sound will bypass the fabric.
Height: The curtain should extend above the roller shutter box—which is the main sound bridge in a window—and reach as close to the floor as possible.
Air gap: 10 to 15 cm between the fabric and the window. A curtain pressed against the window loses its effectiveness.
Step 5 — Choosing the Right Medium
A track ensures a smoother closure and a more even drape than an eyelet rod, whose ripples reduce the actual width covered. With a heavy curtain, the difference is clear.

Step 6 — Check the seller as well as the product
A custom curtain can’t be returned. Before paying, check how long the website has been online, the company’s credentials, the return policy, and the quality of their technical responses. Ask a specific question: if the answer is vague, that’s not a good sign.
